And Then There Were Seven!!!

Of the MANY topics Jeepers argue and debate, the origin of the sevenslat/seven opening grille that is now THE definitive symbol of the Jeep brand.

The origin of the sevenslat grille is VERY simple!!! It is is not a romantic and mysterious story, it was created out of simple manufacturing necessity.

After WWII, Willys-Overland re-engineered the Jeep for civilian use by upgrading the transmission with gears better suited for civilian use, as well as larger headlamps.  To accommodate the larger headlamps, the stamping die was reworked, stations were removed and reworked to allow the original tooling to be utilized.  The remaining seven openings provided sufficient airflow, just as the nine opening grille did.

Look at the photos below, it’s clear that the overall shape/size of the CJ grille is the same as the MB grille.

Henry Ford did not want to have anything to do with the war build-up and only entered the war movement when his son Edsel began working with the Army Air Corp to mass-produce B-24 Liberator bombers.  A.J. Baime chronicles Henry Ford’s ambivalence about getting involved in WWII in his book The Arsenal of Democracy: FDR, Detroit, and an Epic Quest to Arm an America at War.

The U.S. Government needed to ensure a reliable supply of Jeeps, and enlisted Ford to produce the Jeep under license.  Henry Ford insisted that parts produced for the GPW were stamped with an F on them, so Ford could not be held responsible for Jeeps produced by Willys-Overland.

Why would Ford patent the nine opening grille?  And if Ford did, why was this design never seen on a Ford product after the war?

  • The Jeep was not the first vehicle on all seven continents

The idea that the Jeep was the first vehicle to traverse all seven continents sounds good, however, I believe that the VW Beetle was the first vehicle to set a tire on all seven continents.

 

If the Jeep was the first vehicle on all seven continents, why didn’t Willys-Overland use that in their marketing of the CJ Universal after the war?

  • It was a simple tooling change to allow for larger headlamps!!!

As boring as it sounds, Willys-Overland needed to sell vehicles to the civilian population after the war.  The CJ needed larger headlamps, and with limited funds, Willys-Overland reworked the existing tooling

It was just a simple necessity that gave the Jeep the sevenslat grille!!!

It’s a Jeep, NOT a boat!!! IT ALREADY HAS A NAME!!!

As my buddy Dan demonstrated at Bundy Hill last year, a Jeep is not a boat, they don’t float!!!

Boats were given names, THOUSANDS of years ago when humans still believed in all kinds of superstitions such as the world was flat, and there were Gods of every season and any other unexplainable phenomenon.

You DO NOT need a name for your Jeep, and stop asking this INSANE question on social media!!!

Cars & Coffee – May 19, 2019

I attended the first Cars & Coffee of 2019 at the site of the former Walter P. Chrysler Museum, on the FCA World Headquarters Campus.

Jeep brought out the J6, Flatbill and M-715 Five-Quarter Concepts, and they were VERY impressive!!!

The J6 was my favorite, however I don’t think that Jeep will put it into production.

The Flatbill Concept highlights the extremes that the Gladiator can be taken too!!!

The M-715 Concept looks too much like a concept to me, and not enough like a Jeep.  It certainly had a crowd around it!!!

Cars & Coffee is a regular monthly event that Chrysler has held, since they built the museum.  Unfortunately, Fiat closed the museum and turned it into offices for Maserati and Alfa Romeo.


As mentioned previously, Moparinsiders.com reported that the Chrysler Museum may be making a come back at the old Viper plant.

It’s NOT the steering stabilizer!!!

Aside from “What should I name my Jeep?” posts on social media, I believe that the age old question of “Why does my Jeep have death wobble?” is the most common question posted.

Listen to me, it is NOT the steering stabilizer, NOR is it time to install a dual-steering stabilizer!!!My JK recently developed death wobble at +90,000 miles and after proper diagnosis, which is explained very well in the video below, I determined that it was my track bar bushings.

I am happy to report that after having Mumbly’s Off Road install a STEERSMARTS Track Bar, no more death wobble!!!

The moral of the story is that death wobble is not going to be the least costly, and simplest part to replace.  I will go out on a limb and state that bad track bar bushings are ultimately the most over-looked cause of death wobble, once properly diagnosed.

I have also heard through the grape-vine that Jeep may be replacing track bars on new JL’s that experience death wobble???

Not only is the STEERSMARTS track bar a solid replacement, it adds even more red to the underneath of my silver Jeep!!!

Jeep Museum Making a Comeback?

Moparinsiders.com just reported that FCA will be re-opening a portion of the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, now known as Conner Center, to display the vehicles from the Walter P. Chrysler Museum that was closed in 2017.

Chrysler did a GREAT job with the Walter P. Chrysler Museum over the years, with great representations of each brand, especially Jeep, as well as changing themed displays.

I am looking forward to 2019, and the opportunity to visit these vehicles again!!!

Citizens Band (CB) for Trail Comms – Can CB make a Come Back?

Back when I had my first seven slat vehicle, a 1990 Wrangler (in 1992), cell /mobile phones, were not as ubiquitous as they are today…the CB radio however, was not yet TOTALLY forgotten…


Sidebar…remember the Nextel phone, and the Push-to-Talk feature?  Now, if that service still existed…and if it does, there can’t be more than two people that still have it…it would be the perfect trail comms solution.


Today, the CB radio is all but forgotten, however I believe that the CB radio is an effective trail comms solution.  Many in the Jeep community would argue for the use of two-way radios, or hamm, and I understand that these technologies are in many ways better, however for overall investment, ease of use, and practicality, I believe that the CB radio is the way to go for trail comms.


Below is my set-up in my 2014 JK.

For the radio, I chose the Midland 75-822 40 Channel CB-Way Radio.  I like the 75-822 as it’s an “all-in-one” design, and can easily be removed from the Jeep when not in use.

I chose a CoolTech VersaMount2 (http://www.cooltechllc.com) for my dash/grab-handle.  There are similar mounts available from Amazon as well.

I did have to add a Metal MIC HOLDER / Clip – Screw In for CB / Ham Radio to the CoolTech mount, as well as a Universal Replacement Microphone Hanging Buttonfor the belt clip that comes with the radio.

For an antenna, I chose the Quadratec JK-ANTMK-L Extreme Duty Stainless CB Radio Antenna Rear Tailgate Mount with 48″ Antenna for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK

I added the Firestik SS-3H Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Antenna Spring to my antenna mount for what little flex I can get between the tailgate and tire, however more for the couple of extra inches to reach above the top for better reception.

When routing your antenna coax DO NOT wind any excess coax in a circular coil shape, as this can cause RF (radio frequency) issues that will interfere with your signal.

Very important is to tune your antenna, and I use the ASTATIC PDC1 100 Watt SWR/RF TEST METER W/ Workman 3 foot jumper CX-3-PL-PL as it is simple to use, and comes with the needed jumper wire.

I recently learned, while listening to the Jeep Talk Show, that it is a good idea to check and re-adjust your antenna tune if your antenna impacts anything on the trail AND if you remove the top and/or doors on your Jeep!  Below is a great video from Right Channel Radios on how to tune your antenna.
